Detroit 16v 92 Dismantle

Complete engine dismantle of a Detroit 16v 92 and generator to Facilitate its removal from the 23 floor in a Downtown San Francisco high rise.

Location: City/County, CA
Business Type: Residential/Commercial

Our Customer needed their older Detroit 16v 92 removed in order for them to have a new Caterpillar C18 installed in its place.

The issue being that the Detroit was located on the 23 story of a downtown San Francisco high rise with only a 8’ x 5’ service elevator with 3000 lb weight limit  for access.

Our solution: Dismantle the engine and bring the parts out piece by piece.

The Process

We began by disconnecting the electrical and exhaust from the engine. Next, we began dismantling the top end of the engine, starting the valve train and then head removal. Once we were down to the engine blocks we removed the generator from the engine skid mount.

Being that the elevator could only support 3000 pounds we needed to remove the generator’s rotor from the stator section. After the generator was removed, we hoisted the engine blocks off the skid mount in order to remove the crankshaft and separate the conjoined V8 blocks. We removed the crankshaft and then separated the two V8’s so they could fit in the elevator. The engine radiator was removed and then the engine skid was cut into pieces and brought down the elevator. Leaving a vacant concrete pad ready for a brand new 500kw C18 Caterpillar to be installed on.
